Information

At the Darrell Lee Jenkins Jr. Resource Center, we advocate for individuals and families affected by gun violence in Springfield, MA. We work with local organizations to build healthy communities.

Standing in the Gap

Our center stands in the gap for those the system often overlooks. We educate families on their rights, walk with them through legal complexities, and create culturally rooted support systems that honor their experiences. Through our youth programs, neighborhood outreach like “More Mondays,” and faith-infused healing circles, we are actively reshaping what justice looks like in Springfield.

Michelle's Story: Turning Sorrow into Strength

When Michelle Thomas lost her son, Carl Sephus, to senseless violence, her world shifted from heartbreak to fierce resolve. Carl was more than a statistic—he was a brother, a dreamer, a soul with purpose. And Michelle refused to let his story fade in silence. She led a community Speak Out, gathering mothers, youth, and allies in a public stand for justice. With trembling hands but a steady voice, Michelle spoke not just as a grieving mother, but as a leader—demanding change, compassion, and accountability. That pivotal moment lit a fire across Springfield. Today, Michelle leads the M.O.R.E. Healing Peer Support Circles, turning personal sorrow into collective strength. She helps others do what she once thought impossible: speak their truth, reclaim their healing, and honor their loved ones through advocacy. “Carl gave me courage. M.O.R.E. gave me a platform. Together, they gave others hope.” Michelle’s voice continues to echo—in courtrooms, in classrooms, and in circles where healing begins. Her story reminds us that advocacy is not just about changing systems—it’s about changing lives.

Building a Safer Springfield Together

At the Darrell Lee Jenkins Jr Resource Center, we believe that healing and justice are built through relationships. Our work is deeply rooted in Springfield’s neighborhoods, where we collaborate with faith leaders, grassroots organizers, civic associations, and public safety teams to create lasting change.

🏛️ Forest Park Civic Association: As active members of the Forest Park Civic Association, we contribute to neighborhood planning, safety initiatives, and community revitalization efforts. Together, we advocate for equitable investment, host public forums, and support projects that uplift Forest Park families.

👮 C3 Policing Meetings: We attend weekly Counter Criminal Continuum (C3) meetings at Calvary’s Love Church, joining Springfield Police, state officials, and community leaders to share resources, track safety trends, and co-create solutions. These meetings foster transparency, trust, and real-time collaboration to reduce violence and build safer streets.

🙌 New Hope Pentecostal Church: We partner with New Hope to host prayer gatherings, healing circles, and outreach events that center faith and resilience. Their spiritual leadership strengthens our trauma-informed approach to community restoration.

🏘️ Neighbor2Neighbor Springfield: Together, we mobilize residents around housing justice, civic engagement, and economic equity. DLJJRC supports N2N’s grassroots campaigns and joins efforts to elevate marginalized voices.

🛑 Springfield No One Leaves: We collaborate with SNOL to prevent displacement and protect families from eviction. Through rallies, legal education, and direct action, we stand for housing as a human right.

⚖️ Hampden County District Attorney’s Office: Through the DA’s outreach unit, we co-develop youth diversion programs, restorative justice initiatives, and violence prevention strategies that prioritize healing over punishment.

🗳️ State Representatives: We maintain strong relationships with local legislators—including Rep. Bud Williams, and Rep. Carlos González—to advocate for trauma-informed care, youth development, and systemic reform.

“We don’t just serve the community—we build with it. Every partnership is a thread in the fabric of healing, justice, and hope.”
